NLU ASSAM-MENSTRUAL LEAVE FOR FEMALE STUDENTS

INTRODUCTION

National Law University and Judicial Academy, Assam (NLUJA) has taken a significant step towards promoting inclusivity and the well-being of its female students by implementing a ‘Menstrual Leave’ policy.

MENSTRUAL LEAVE POLICY

Under this new policy, female students at the University are now entitled to avail of Menstrual Leave. To do so, they must apply, and these leave days will be based on the institution’s existing Medical Leave policies. It’s essential to note that students must maintain a minimum attendance of 65% to be eligible for this leave.

A Press release issued by the university, “This initiative aims to support the health and well-being of our female students, acknowledging the unique needs and challenges they might face during menstruation. NLUJA remains committed to fostering an inclusive and supportive academic environment,”.

This progressive move follows a demand by the Student Welfare Committee of the Student Bar Council of NLUJA Assam.

The Dharmashastra National Law University, Jabalpur, DNLU has introduced the landmark policy to grant menstrual leave for its female students, as per a circular dated September 29, 2023. The Significant decision comes with the approval of the competent authority and is in line with the commitment of the university to provide special arrangements for its female students.

NLU, MENSTRUAL LEAVE

The said initiative was set in motion in response to the request which is being made by the Student Bar Association Assessment Year 2022-2023 and as a result, it has officially been notified by the University that full-time female students now have the option to compensate for any missed classes due to their menstrual cycle.

The rules governing the general makeup policy remain consistent with the current practice, wherein the court allowed for a maximum of 6 makeup classes per subject per semester. Therefore, the office of the Dean of Students Welfare will serve as the approving authority, for the female students who are seeking to avail of the said policy.
